I was first introduced to this loving and close-knit community by my father a few years ago, who continues to devote every other Saturday to treating whomever needs his acupuncture. I was much younger then, inexperienced in caring for the handicapped students that came to play and bond with the volunteers downstairs. So I sat close to my dad upstairs, eating the lunch provided for us and afterwards helping him treat his patients. With parents of the handicapped, the handicapped themselves, pastors, and volunteers like us gathered in this quaint little Victorian style home, hands together in prayer, I looked up and saw their heads bowed down in a communal call for well-being and health for each present individual. This moved me to continue to volunteer during the Vacation Bible Study (VBS) for two week the following summer.

There I met Yoora Park, one of my current supervisors. She was different from many of the other volunteers there, including me. She wasn’t there to collect hours or impress colleges, instead looking to give back to others and better herself.

During VBS, I was assigned to Jake, an autistic boy of 12, with my partner Adam. He couldn’t speak, so communication was understandably difficult during the first couple of days. He was constantly moving to different rooms where he wasn’t allowed and quite adamant about going where he wanted, requiring physical force from Adam and I to act as a preventative. But as this two-week program progressed, we learned and adapted to Jake’s movements. By the last day, we had developed not only a volunteer-student relationship, but also one as friends.

School was beginning in September, and another semester of Saturday Milal had begun. Each Saturday, my mom drove me 45 minutes to the small church where the program was held, from 10:30 to 4:00. It was there I met the Kim twins. I was first introduced to Ethan, although I ended up taking care of his brother Joseph for the majority of my time there. They both had severe autism and several physical disorders, wheelchair bound when I saw them at VBS. These boys were high maintenance, unable to speak and on a strict special diet. Joseph was wheelchair bound for most of his life at Milal, but his special diet and strenuous exercise helped him start walking again with my help. I am proud to say that he can now walk on his own with some supervision, and can even climb stairs.

From his past wheelchair-bound situation when I first saw them during VBS to now, where he has dramatically improved his mobility with the support of this fantastic Milal community, Joseph has also made a significant impact on me. Prior to my volunteering, I was naive however, the time spent in that church has helped me mature and develop a sense of selflessness and devotion to those less fortunate than myself. I have my many supervisors, fellow volunteers, and of course the disabled students to thank for providing me with a different perspective of life.
